# The F-35 relies on a $400,000 helmet that’s had its own share of problems

The F-35 has become notorious for its stratospheric price tag, along with the plane's host of mechanical and software problems.

The cost of the US's fifth-generation fighter has already [risen](<https://www.businessinsider.com/this-map-show-the-f-35-fiasco-2015-1>) to approximately $400 billion with a projected lifetime operating cost of $1.5 trillion. The Marines are still [set on launching](<https://www.businessinsider.com/sandra-i-erwin-the-f-35-story-that-nobodys-talking-about-2015-3>) the F-35 in the near term despite its incomplete software package.

These problems apply to the F-35's helmet as well. Each F-35 helmet costs over $400,000, the Washington Post [reports](<https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2015/04/01/meet-the-most-fascinating-part-of-the-f-35-the-400000-helmet/?tid=sm_tw>). And like the F-35, the helmet has had its own run of development setbacks and cost overruns.

Each visor is designed to function as a heads-up display that will work in conjunction with six high resolution cameras embedded in the skin across the F-35. Ideally, during flight the pilot would be able to see through the walls of the jet as images from the cameras are displayed in real time across the visor surface.

"When the helmet's tuned correctly to the pilot's eyes, you almost step into this other world where all this information comes in. You can look through the jet's eyeballs to see the world as the jet sees the world," Al Norman, an F-35 test pilot, [told](<https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2015/04/01/meet-the-most-fascinating-part-of-the-f-35-the-400000-helmet/?tid=sm_tw>) The Washington Post.

This enhanced situational awareness would allow the pilot to see enemy aircraft and targets on the ground that the sides of the cockpit might otherwise obscure. The visor also displays critical information about speed and altitude.

But the helmet, like the rest of the F-35, ran into operational problems.

[According](<https://www.businessinsider.com/here-are-all-the-problems-with-the-f-35-that-the-pentagon-found-in-a-2014-report-2015-3>) to testing from the Department of Defense, turbulence and buffeting of the aircraft could cause significant display issues within the helmet.

The report [stated](<https://www.dote.osd.mil/pub/reports/FY2014/pdf/dod/2014f35jsf.pdf>) that during basic offensive and defensive maneuvers the conditions negatively effected the display, a problem that could have "the greatest impact in scenarios where a pilot was maneuvering to defeat a missile shot."

In addition, the Post [noted](<https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2015/04/01/meet-the-most-fascinating-part-of-the-f-35-the-400000-helmet/?tid=sm_tw>) that the helmets suffered from night-vision and streaming issues that caused motion sickness among pilots. Fortunately these problems have largely been resolved, although the green glow associated with the night vision is still a persistent issue.
