# How foreign-born military spouses have built a network for themselves

Military service members with a partner born in another country face a slew of administrative, personal, and professional challenges that are specific to the overlap between military life and immigrant life. They have all the normal headaches that foreign-born Americans face, like professional credentials that don't transfer over to America, as well as special headaches, like figuring out the paperwork to travel to Germany as an American military spouse born in Thailand.

"What we do is support a successful transition for those of us who immigrate to transition well into the military and American life," said Lydiah Owiti-Otienoh, the founder of Foreign Born Military Spouse Network, a nonprofit that supports immigrant partners of U.S. service members.

### Special Needs of Foreign-Born Spouses

Imagine navigating a PCS move as the aforementioned Thai spouse who married into an American military family. She might wait forever to move to Germany with her spouse while the Thai and German governments and the U.S. military all have to agree that the paperwork is correct.

"Because of the complexity of living in this intersection between immigration and the military, it can take up to five to seven years for a foreign military spouse to transition successfully," Owiti-Otienoh told WATM, referencing hard data that Foreign Born Military Spouse Network has collected. The timeline for foreign-born spouses in the civilian world? Just one to three years.

Owiti-Otienoh lived in that tough overlap for years without knowing about most of the resources that the Department of Defense, other government agencies, and nonprofits offered.

" I didn't find any resources. And I struggled. So that lived experience, I got curious," she said. "It was only after my husband was retiring that I found one of the flyers that he had that had some resources for military spouses. And I asked, 'What is that?' So I went online and started checking, 'What is a military spouse?'

"And this whole community opened up to me," she said. "I was like, 'Oh, there are even Facebook groups. There are, you know, organizations, there are careers, all this," and that was 12 years in. So then I started to ask myself questions about why I did not know about all these resources."

### Building the network she wished she'd had

Lydiah had a law degree and two master's degrees, so she suspected that, if she had missed this much, then a lot of spouses likely had as well. But it was too late for her to access many of the resources.

" Unfortunately, at that time, we were considered veteran spouses, and we were leaving, so I couldn't access the things that were available for active-duty spouses," she said.

So she decided to make a network for people like her, where they could trade tips they had learned. That grew from a Facebook post to a group of volunteers to, now, a full nonprofit organization that offers classes on how to navigate the transition.

"So our data, which is very interesting, collected over the last one and a half years, has shown us that with the people that have gone through the three cohorts that we have offered, we have been able to reduce transition periods from five to seven years to eight to 12 months."

"We came up with a transition education program because we realized that over eighty percent of our community members say transition is their biggest problem, transitioning in" said Owiti-Otienoh. "So we came up with a program that helps them to transition successfully.

"So this program is a two-day intensive where we start with just giving you the basics, 'What is the military? What do they do?' We talk you through the branches, mannerisms, what to expect of their lifestyle, PCSing, all that stuff. Then we go into learning about American cross-cultural training."

### The Need for Bespoke Foreign-Born Spouse Transitions

Doing the training live has a few obvious weaknesses, like it being hard to sync up the time between instructors and spouses in the U.S. and those stationed overseas or maybe even still in their home country. Lydiah organizes the cohorts by shared factors like nation of origin, but that means that some spouses may wait a while for a cohort to fill with spouses in a similar place to them.

After all, if a Marine in Rota marries a Spanish man practicing law and brings him with her to Camp Pendleton, then the husband would benefit most from a cohort of spouses in the Navy or Marines, on the West Coast, who are from Spain, or at least the European Union, who are transferring a professional degree. If scheduling that sounds like a lot to juggle in a network of 7,000 spouses with new members all the time, it is.

But letting people fall through the cracks is a disservice to the spouse and the loss of an advantage to the military community.

"Realize, also, like 78% plus of foreign-born spouses have college degrees. Over 50 have a second degree. So most are very highly educated," Owiti-Otienoh pointed out.

The more skills they bring to the base and to their local community, the more everyone prospers, but that requires that they know how to get their credentials transferred or get training to fill in gaps not required in their home country but required in America.

### A New Grant to Fund an Online Learning Platform

Now, thanks to a [2026 MIC Impact Award grant](<https://militaryinfluencer.com/mic-impact-awards-winners-2026>), Owiti-Otienoh and the Foreign Born Military Spouse Network can work on a training platform to let members learn at their own pace and on their own time, similar to many online colleges and other learning platforms. The classes will start with immigration, but the need goes well beyond that.

"Apart from immigration, we want to help people transfer their careers into America because sometimes people think that 'Because I was a lawyer and someone has told me my law degree doesn't transfer to America, that's the end of it.' There's actually a pathway. You can evaluate the degree that you have and see how it fits with the American system, depending on which state you are in, and you do some certain courses to be at par and then certified, right? Or take the bar or something. It happens. We see it a lot with teachers, with engineers, with doctors, with the pharmacists," she said.

So the new learning platform will include the common courses, like how to navigate the American credit system and how to get a driver's license, and more specific topics like how to transfer a medical license for doctors.

They also go into things like how to manage mental health thousands of miles from a family support network.

"We go into wellness and crisis prevention because we have a lot of people in crisis when it comes to immigration and when it comes to domestic violence," she said. "So we want to make sure that they understand, 'cause there are a lot of things that go culturally into how you understand wellness, particularly mental health. For most of us, mental health is a taboo.

"I will talk as an African, we don't talk about mental health. 'Go speak to your sister.' Seeing a therapist and going to counseling, that's not something that is common. We have to make sure that you understand that this life that you're getting into is going to interfere with you mentally in many, many ways. Because first of all, you've left your whole family, you have no social support, so the things that might have helped hold you up are no longer there."

### Volunteers Are the Backbone

Right now, all of the training has been achieved thanks to thousands of volunteer hours from experts, including many foreign-born spouses who have transitioned successfully.

" We want to free the money and the time and increase impact using this online platform that is built, and anybody can access it at any time," she said. "And guess what it does also? It even prepares people who are not yet in America, that by the time they come to America now, they are ready to hit the ground running."

One more bonus of the online platform made possible with the MIC Impact Award? She and her team plan to collect hard data on how people navigate each stage of the platform and make improvements.

The team is still fundraising for the platform and to add features.

### The Program Still Needs Help

"We can track the metrics and see what changes, because every module is interactive and we keep asking, 'Is it working? What is not working? Are they definitely doing what they need to do?'" Owiti-Otienoh said. "And we know there will be human touchpoints, so that is why we're seeking more funds. We'll put all these modules on an online platform, make it interactive, make it available to people at any time."

But even with a fully functional online platform, the core mission of Foreign Born Military Spouse Network won't change.

"Of course, we will still help people transition," she said.
