(JIJI Press/AFP via Getty Images)* Every year at 8:15 am on August 6, the Mayor of Hiroshima, Japan delivers a Peace Declaration. This year was no different. After a moment of silence, Mayor Kazumi Matsui called on the world to abolish nuclear weapons and pray for a lasting world peace. But his 2026 statement had a spicy little bite to it—and there's a good reason for it: The Prime Minister might want to introduce nuclear weapons into Japan. **Also Read: [These specialized soldiers train to neutralize enemy nuclear weapons]()** Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has [pushed the idea of an open debate]() about integrating nuclear weapons into Japan's defensive planning. If implemented, it would reverse the country’s decades-old ban on producing, possessing or hosting foreign nuclear weapons, called the "Three Non-Nuclear Principles." It's not the first step toward lifting the self-imposed ban. Koizumi didn't even suggest changing the policy. The date is the anniversary of the United States dropping an atomic bomb on the city. 8:15 am is the time it detonated. Survivors of the attack still attend the annual speech at Peace Memorial Park. After praying for victims of the original attack, the mayor called for the usual worldwide ban on nuclear weapons, and prayer for world peace, but he also scolded world leaders for using "deterrence" as an excuse for maintaining an arsenal. "We still see military invasions using nuclear weapons as tools of intimidation as well as other imperious actions by major powers in violation of international law," he said. "The responsibility for this failure lies with political leaders who place blame on others to justify their own behavior." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMn3bE6JGg4 Also in the crowd and listening to the mayor's speech, sitting among the survivors of the "Little Boy" atomic bomb, was Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Takaichi's government has taken heat in the Japanese press in 2026, as officials close to her [express the opinion]() that Japan should have nuclear weapons. The Prime Minister herself confirmed that her government is following the principles—but [dodges questions]() about her enduring dedication to them. "Too many political leaders, still considering nuclear deterrence a realistic approach, accept the international community’s legitimization of violence, which simply pushes a world without nuclear weapons further into the distance," the Mayor of Hiroshima continued. "In a time when fading memories of war could lead to the use of nuclear weapons." She's not the only one. While nuclear weapons are still deeply unpopular in Japan, [21% of the country]() thinks it's time to revise that policy. The Mayor of Nagasaki also delivers an annual Peace Declaration on August 9. Much like Hiroshima's ceremony, it honors survivors, calls for abolishing nuclear weapons, and prays for peace.
