# 3 great chassis options for different budgets to turn your pistol into a PDW

Pistols are difficult personal defense weapons (PDW) to shoot. Unless you spend a lot of time and ammo on meaningful training, a high-stress shoot with a pistol can easily turn into spamming the trigger to the tune of mostly misses. Add the complexity of bystanders or family members, and the risk of engaging a threat with a handgun approaches an unacceptable level for a novice gun owner.

This isn't a new problem, and the solution isn't new, either. Going back to the 1860s, Colt Dragoon and Navy revolvers were able to accept shoulder stocks. With these additional points of contact, a pistol shooter can be more accurate at greater distances. Early semi-automatic military pistols like the Luger and Hi-Power could also be fitted with stocks. More effective than a standard sidearm and without the bulk of an infantry rifle, these personal defense weapons became ideal for rear echelon troops.

Civilians, however, have some hurdles to jump through. Aside from historical exemptions, putting a stock on a pistol previously required a Form 1 to convert the pistol into a legal short-barreled rifle and a $200 tax. Or, a pistol brace could be used a legal workaround. With the [2026 federal court ruling](<https://www.wearethemighty.com/tactical/everything-you-need-to-know-about-short-barreled-rifles-shotguns-silencers.md>) on NFA items and the subsequent [guidance provided by the ATF](<https://www.atf.gov/media/30961/download>), a chassis is an easy way for a casual gun owner to take their existing pistol and make it more ergonomic with a stock (state and local laws still apply).

Here are three of the best options at different price points.

### 1. Flux Raider

*A kitted out Raider also has serious ODST energy. (Flux Defense)*

The Raider is arguably the go-to chassis option to turn a pistol into a PDW. Capitalizing on the modular Fire Control Unit of the SIG Sauer P320, the Raider takes parts from the P320 to build a subgun on a new polymer frame with a stock. Adopted by Special Forces for use with M17 and M18 pistols already in the military inventory, the Raider epitomizes the pistol-to-PDW concept and is extremely popular on the civilian market. With an MSRP of $419.99, it's a moderate investment to take your pistol game to the next level.

Expanding the Raider line, Flux released the Raider 365 for use with the SIG P365 ecosystem. Coming in an even smaller form factor than the original, the Raider 365 maximizes (or minimizes, depending on how you look at it) the PDW package.

If you already have a P365 for concealed carry, the Raider can turn it into a more effective but still concealable platform. Crucially for a weapon that can be slung and carried, the Raider features an external safety.

### 2. Recover Tactical 20/20

![pistol chassis for pdw ergonomics](<https://www.wearethemighty.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/Recover-Tactical-20-20.webp>)
*PDW ergonomics without the price of an additional pistol. (Recover Tactical)*

Balling on a budget? The Recover 20/20 is compatible with multiple pistols including M&Ps, 1911s, Glocks, and even Glock clones like the PSA Dagger, and starts at just under $100. While they'll be happy to sell you accessories, that base price accomplishes the PDW bare minimum with a glass-reinforced polymer stock.

Moreover, there's no premium for a stock over a pistol brace. Utilizing a folding stock and a minimalist chassis that attaches to the pistol's accessory rail, the Recover 20/20 provides an extremely compact package for storage and transportation.

Because it's an attachment to the existing pistol, the Recover 20/20 doesn't include its own safety mechanism. If your pistol has a trigger safety but not a manual safety, Recover offers a holster to cover the trigger when the weapon isn't in use. Beyond that, you can upgrade your Recover 20/20 further with a forward mag holder, grip, accessory rails, and even a front shroud or glass breaker if you're feeling extra tactical.

### 3. B&T USW

![pistol chassis for pdw house clear](<https://www.wearethemighty.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/BT-USW.jpg>)
*If you need a Swiss PDW to match your Swiss watch, accept no substitutes. (B&T)*

This one's for the shooters who wear an AP because Rolex is too mainstream. If you shoot as a casual hobby between trips to the country club and Equinox, the Swiss engineers at B&T have the PDW chassis for you. Following [a police shooting in Zurich](<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgLmZyrHAvY&t=27s>) where the officer missed nearly all of his shots, B&T engineers were tasked with creating a stocked service weapon that retained the compact form factor of a standard pistol.

Building on a Sphinx pistol, the result was the Universal Service Weapon. Unlike the Raider or Recover 20/20, the USW features an aluminum construction for maximum strength and rigidity in a compact and lightweight package. B&T later released conversion kits for the Glock, P320, and P10C platforms.

While a full USW sells for about $2,000, the conversion kits come in between $300-550 dollars. However, you still need big bucks and connections because B&T USA rarely gets them into the country. That said, with B&T in Switzerland taking control of the U.S. company, parts may be returning to the U.S. market.
