Servicemembers go above and beyond every day, dedicating their lives to service, sacrifice and excellence, and May is Military Appreciation Month to honor all those who serve. It is also an opportunity for military members to reflect, celebrate and give back to the military community that stands beside them.

Whether you’re retired, Active Duty or a part of a military family and looking to connect with fellow military members, give back through service or simply enjoy well-deserved appreciation, here are 10 meaningful ways to celebrate this special month:

1. Attend military appreciation events

Many cities and military bases host special events throughout May, including parades, ceremonies and appreciation nights. These events are a great way to come together with fellow servicemembers, celebrate with your family and feel the support of the community. Check with your local installation, Veterans’ organizations or city council for scheduled celebrations.

2. Take advantage of military discounts and freebies

This month, businesses across the country offer exclusive discounts, deals and freebies as a way to say thank you. From free meals at restaurants to discounted travel and shopping, take time to enjoy these well-deserved perks. Just search online for “military discounts in May” to find local participating businesses.

3. Give back through volunteering

Serving others is a core value of the military, and Military Appreciation Month is a perfect time to pay it forward. Consider volunteering at a veterans’ hospital, food bank or mentorship program for younger servicemembers or military children. Organizations like Team Rubicon, the USO and Wreaths Across America provide excellent opportunities to give back to the military community.

4. Explore military history and heritage

Take time to reflect on the rich history of the U.S. Armed Forces and the servicemembers who came before you. Visit a military museum, historical site or national memorial to deepen your appreciation for the legacy of service.

5. Share your story

Your service is part of a bigger story of resilience and sacrifice. Take this opportunity to share your journey in person, on social media or through a local veterans’ organization. Your experiences can inspire others, educate civilians and strengthen the bond between military members past and present.

6. Celebrate with your military family

Your fellow servicemembers are like family, and Military Appreciation Month is a great time to connect, reflect and celebrate together. Plan a small get-together, go on a group outing or simply take a moment to acknowledge the hard work you and your unit put in every day.

7.Recognize fellow servicemembers

Every day, you serve alongside incredible men and women who go above and beyond. Take the time to recognize a fellow servicemember for their dedication with something as simple as a “thank you,” a personal note or even nominating them for an award. Lifting each other up strengthens the team.

8.Support Veteran-owned businesses

Show your appreciation for those who have served by supporting Veteran-owned businesses. Consider dining at a Veteran-owned restaurant, purchasing from Veteran entrepreneurs or spreading the word about military-owned brands.

9. Focus on your financial future

Military service comes with unique financial benefits, from special savings programs to VA home loans. Use this month to evaluate your financial goals, start a new savings plan or explore resources like Navy Federal’s financial tools and services designed specifically for military members and their families. You may want to engage in fitness activities, seek out mental health resources or simply take a well-deserved day of rest.
