Military video games make up an exciting place of recreation for all kinds of people. Some of these series have run for a couple of decades, which provides credence of why they made the list. Here are the top 5 military video game series on our planet as of today.

  1. Call of Duty.

Activision's long-running and smash hit Call of Duty began in 2003, which has turned into over twenty sequels and off-shoots. The series covers battles from World War II to Vietnam to the present day intermingling with special operations and clandestine storylines. It has spawned comics, merchandise and a planned feature film. A fun play at any time of the day or night.

2. Battlefield.

Brought to you by Electronic Arts in 2002 in its initial format of Battlefield 1942 the franchise has produced 12 games and more than12 expansion packs that have been played by more than 50 million people worldwide as of 2012. Incredible numbers, market reach and creativity on behalf of EA. Players get to engage with combatants across a spectrum of time and place which rivals only the prior listed game franchise. Supposedly their is a TV series in the works as well.

3. Halo.

Brought to you by the behemoth known as Microsoft in 2001, it has since become one of the highest-grossing franchises raking in a "measly" $6.5B thus far, which seems small when thinking upon it. Well, it is still a ways from taking on the Mickey Mouse franchise, which is lightyears ahead of our beloved Halo and ye ole Master Chief. Our star player and resident butt-kicker Master Chief has fought across so many alien territories he is his own "Universe's Most Interesting Man." Great graphics, multiplayer interaction and storyline make us look forward to the next iteration and the planned TV show from Paramount.

4. Command and Conquer.

Ah, so many friendly and gregarious faces on each cover of the Command and Conquer series. It reminds me of a Christmas party full of friends or well...maybe frenemies. The series began way back in the 1990s initially available on CD-Rom, oh do we remember those things. They had interactive cut scenes with real-life actors played off the CD-Rom in our lovely 4x or maybe even 16x drive. The joys of having a Pentium processor back in the day. Nonetheless, the series is a seminal one in the life and times of strategy-based games focused on the military realm. Still remember the Sean Connery-Esque spy in my Command and Conquer: Red Alert game. Wonder if the great Sir Connery ever knew. Check out any of the over 20 titles for a lot of fun, strategy and some real-time military action in before your bedtime.

5. Star Wars: Battlefront.

The chance to play on the larger-than-life battlefields of the Star Wars universe, yes, please! EA had a stroke of continued genius in creating the initial game and its sequels. We get the chance to fight an AT-AT on Hoth, fly X-Wings into battle against the Death Star and play as classic Star Wars characters in the battle. A childhood dream comes true with this series! They have been making the series since 2004 and are on title number six. Looking forward to the next one.
