With the 2023 Star Wars celebration, Disney has released the first teaser trailer for Ahsoka — and it did not disappoint. It teases Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return as “heir to the Empire” and includes animated favorites like Sabine, Hera, and Chopper. Viewers of Andor (which should be all of you — what a mature, high-stakes Star Wars series) will recognize Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma, and with her, a darker tone than viewers of The Mandalorian or even Kenobi might be used to.

Watch the trailer here:

“Something’s coming. Something dark. I can sense it,” intones Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson). Heralded by the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn, arguably the most intelligent tactician in Imperial history, not only is the Empire growing in strength in the shadows of the New Republic, but new Dark Side villains Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati appear, along with their orange-red lightsabers. Orange lightsabers are unique throughout the history of the Jedi and the Sith, so their appearance in the trailer has provided much speculation from fans.

We know from season two of The Mandalorian that Ahsoka is searching for her friend, Ezra Bridger, a Jedi Padawan who fought alongside Ahsoka against foes such as Darth Maul and, significantly, Grand Admiral Thrawn. The two were last seen when they were taken into hyperspace by the purrgil, a semi-sentient species of whales that live in deep space. This sacrifice was part of Ezra’s plan, which allowed him to help remove Thrawn and protect his friends and homeworld of Lothal.

Fans of Jedi lore, like myself, look like we’re going to have a great time watching Ahsoka, which will arrive on Disney+ in August of 2023.
