Unveiling untold histories

Before we embark on this epic adventure, let's look at the untold history of Special Forces in the American military. From the daring exploits of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in World War II to the modern-day heroes of the Army Green Berets, the journey of Special Forces is a testament to their indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment.

During World War II, the OSS emerged as a formidable force, pioneering unconventional warfare tactics and conducting covert operations behind enemy lines. These brave individuals, known as "Jedburghs," infiltrated occupied territories, coordinated resistance movements, and gathered critical intelligence. Their audacious actions laid the foundation for the future of the Special Forces.

Enter the Green Berets

Following the success of the OSS, the United States Army recognized the need for a specialized force capable of operating in unconventional warfare environments. In 1952, President John F. Kennedy, himself a former Navy PT boat commander, played a pivotal role in establishing the Army Special Forces, famously known as the Green Berets.

The Green Berets quickly became synonymous with the epitome of excellence in Special Forces. These highly trained soldiers underwent rigorous selection processes and intensive training in unconventional warfare, counterinsurgency, and foreign internal defense. From the jungles of Vietnam to the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan, Green Berets have left an indelible mark on history, embodying the ethos of "De Oppresso Liber" – to free the oppressed.

SEALs, Rangers, MARSOC and the rest

But the Green Berets are not alone in the realm of Special Operations. The Navy SEALs, established in 1962, are renowned for their maritime expertise, precision raids, and extraordinary physical capabilities. They operate in the most challenging environments, including the sea, air, and land, earning them the moniker "Sea, Air, Land" or SEALs. From the capture of Osama bin Laden to countless clandestine missions, SEALs have solidified their legendary status in the annals of Special Forces history.

The United States Army Rangers, dating back to World War II, epitomize the spirit of shock and awe. These elite warriors specialize in direct-action operations, seizing key objectives, and conducting raids quickly and precisely. Rangers lead the way, embodying the motto "Rangers Lead the Way" and proving themselves as the vanguards of Special Operations excellence.

In addition to the Green Berets, SEALs, and Rangers, other branches have their own exceptional Special Operations units. The Air Force Special Tactics teams are the masters of air-to-ground integration, providing crucial support in austere environments. The Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) is a force to be reckoned with, specializing in expeditionary warfare and recon. Finally, the Coast Guard deploys its elite forces, known as the Maritime Security Response Team (MSRT), to combat maritime terrorism and conduct high-risk maritime law enforcement operations.

Why the world watches special operators

Special Operations captivate us, not just for their world-saving feats but for their remarkable skills. The league of extraordinary warriors

Prepare for an exhilarating overview of Special Operations units across the military. From the legendary Navy SEALs, who are equally comfortable swimming with sharks and flying through the sky, to the airborne warriors of the Army Rangers, let’s meet the colorful cast of characters that make up this elite community. Each branch brings its own unique flavor to the table, but they all share one common trait: an undying commitment to excellence.

During the Vietnam War, Captain Roger Donlon, a Green Beret team leader, demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership. In July 1964, Captain Donlon's Special Forces camp came under attack by a large Viet Cong force. Despite being wounded multiple times, he fought alongside his comrades, coordinating the defense and repelling the enemy. Captain Donlon became the first Special Forces member to receive the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in the face of overwhelming odds.

In 2005, during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan, a team of Navy SEALs found themselves heavily outnumbered and engaged in a fierce firefight with Taliban fighters. Petty Officer Second Class Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of the operation, endured unimaginable hardships and displayed exceptional resilience as he evaded capture for days before finally being rescued. Luttrell's harrowing story, chronicled in his memoir "Lone Survivor" and the subsequent film adaptation, showcases the indomitable spirit of Navy SEALs in the face of adversity.

During World War II, as part of the D-Day invasion, the 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions were tasked with scaling the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc under heavy enemy fire. Despite the treacherous conditions and fierce resistance, the Rangers successfully seized the German artillery positions, enabling the success of the larger invasion force. Their audacious and heroic actions on D-Day exemplified the courage and tenacity that define the Ranger ethos.

Special Tactics & MARSOC operators

The Air Force Special Tactics teams comprise highly trained individuals who provide vital air-to-ground integration and support. In 2002, during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan, Technical Sergeant John Chapman, a Combat Controller, displayed extraordinary valor. After being left behind during an enemy ambush, Sergeant Chapman fought tirelessly against overwhelming odds, holding off enemy forces and providing critical air support to his teammates. His selfless actions in the face of grave danger earned him the Medal of Honor posthumously.

MARSOC operators have proven their mettle in combat operations. In 2004, during the Second Battle of Fallujah in Iraq, Gunnery Sergeant Jeremiah Workman, a MARSOC Raider, demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership. As his unit came under heavy enemy fire, Workman fearlessly led the charge, eliminating enemy positions and rallying his fellow Marines. His actions under fire and dedication to his comrades earned him the Navy Cross, highlighting the unwavering spirit of MARSOC.
